From theoretical treaties to musical masterpieces

The exhibition From theoretical treaties to musical masterpieces - musical collections in the Jagiellonian Library through the ages accompanies the Congress of the International Association of Music Libraries, Archives and Documentation Centres (IAML) held at the Jagielonian University on 14-19 July 2019.

The exhibition aims to present a selection of particularly valuable and interesting musical manuscripts and prints stored in Jagiellonian Library. The items were put on display in a such a way as to reflect the chronology of acquisition and growth of the collection as well as to show the historical changes in its character. The primary goal of the organisers has been to show some specific features of the music collection that owes its nature, firstly, to the strong, innate connection between the library and the teaching and a research activity of the university, secondly, to the notion of the Jagiellonian Library as a Bibliotheca patria – the homeland library which was to preserve the treasures of Polish national culture, and, thirdly, to the fact that musical items stored in the library are of great importance not only for the local, but also for European and world musical culture.

The exhibition preview will take place on 12 July at 12.00 noon. Opening hours:

10.00 a.m. – 6.00 p.m. (15-19 July)

10.00 a.m. – 3.00 p.m. (22-26 July)
