Exhibition: Mathematics on Postage Stamps

From 5 September to 4 October 2019 the Jagiellonian library will hold an exhibition of postage stamps from all over the world devoted to mathematics and mathematicians.

The exhibited stamps depict both world famous mathematicians and those who are well-known mainly in their countries of origin, from Tales, Pythagoras and Archimedes to Euler and Gauss to  contemporary scholars, including Fields Medal winners. They also commemorate important mathematical events, such as the World Mathematical Year and the International Congresses of Mathematicians. Some stamps are devoted to mathematics itself, showing fractals, mathematical objects and formula, or illustrations of famous theorems. The philatelic attractions also include the First Day Covers (FDCs), that is, special envelopes issued together with newly released stamps, special commemorative postcards with drawings or portraits and thematically related stamps, as well as specially printed large format sheets.

The displayed items are part of Danuta and Krzysztof Czarkowski’s collection. The preview of the exhibition will take place on 4 September at 6.00 p.m. It will accompany the Congress of Polish Mathematicians, held in Kraków from 3 to 7 September.
