Exhibition: Mathematicians and mathematics on the 100th anniversary of the Polish Mathematical Society

Date: 07.08.2019 - 23.08.2019
Place: Jagiellonian Library
Exhibition: Mathematicians and mathematics on the 100th anniversary of the Polish Mathematical Society

The exhibition was organised by the Commission of Science, Education and Sports and the Polish Mathematical Society, as the Polish Senate has declared 2019 to be the Year of Mathematics. It was first opened at the Senate on 8 May 2019 by Deputy Senate Marshal Michał Seweryński.

Several display panels present the history of Polish mathematical communities, such as the Warsaw School of Mathematics and Lviv School of Mathematics, along with their most famous representatives, including the originator of functional analysis Stefan Banach. The exhibition also displays biographies of Marian Rejewski, Jerzy Różycki and Henryk Zygalski – three University of Poznań cryptologists that decoded the German Enigma machine. Profiles of all presidents of the Polish Mathematical Society are also presented at the exhibition.

The segment ‘Mathematics – the present and future challenges’ shows selected posters from the Mathematical Moments series created by the American Mathematical Society, promoting the role which mathematics play in nature, medicine, technology, and culture.
