Shaping European citizenship in post-totalitarian societies

The Division of Politics and Culture of Mediterranean Countries at the Institute of European Studies of the Jagiellonian University is hosting the international conference “Shaping European citizenship in post-totalitarian societies. Reflections 15 years after the enlargement of the European Union” – SHARE EU. The event is part of the Europe for Citizens programme carried out at the Jagiellonian University.

The conference will be an opportunity to discuss changes taking place in Europe in the context of:

  • transition from undemocratic systems (totalitarian and authoritarian) to democracy,
  • civil society transformations within a post-totalitarian society,
  • changes taking place in Central and Eastern Europe before and after the 2004 EU enlargement, with particular emphasis on the issue of national and European identity,
  • memory of totalitarianism in post-totalitarian societies (a comparative perspective).

The conference will consist of three panel sessions:

  • first panel session in Polish (9.00 a.m. - 11.00 a.m.),
  • second panel session in English (11.00 a.m. - 1.00 p.m.),
  • afternoon seminar for MA and PhD students (1.00 p.m. - 3.00 p.m.).

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic restrictions, the conference will be held online on the Microsoft Teams platform.

The conference will feature panels of up to five speakers, during which there will be an opportunity to deliver 15-minute talks to be followed by questions and discussion.

The prospective participants are required to confirm their participation and send the proposed topic of their contribution along with the completed application form by January 15, 2021 to: malgorzata.fijal@doctoral.uj.edu.pl.

The participation is free of charge. The organisers are planning to publish the most interesting articles in Politeja journal of the JU Faculty of International and Political Studies.
