Academic Remembrance Day

The Academic Remembrance Day marks the 83th anniversary of the treacherous arrest of 183 professors of the Jagiellonian University and other Kraków higher education institutions by Gestapo and their deportation to concentration camps in Sachsenhausen and Dachau, where over a dozen of them lost their lives. Each year, the JU academic community marks this tragic anniversary together with other academic institutions from Kraków.

 

Celebrations Programme – 7 November:

Rakowice Cemetery

  • meeting of delegations of Kraków higher education institutions at the cemetery gate,
  • laying of flowers at the graves of deceased professors of Kraków higher education institutions
  • unveiling of the gravestone of Prof. Jerzy Smoleński, renovated at the initiative of the Committee for Maintenance of JU Professors' Graves

Salwator Cemetery

  • laying of flowers at the graves of deceased professors of Kraków higher education institutions

Barracks of the Gen. Marian Zdrzałka 16th Airborne Battalion, ul. Wrocławska 82

  • laying of a wreath at the commemorative plaque

  • address by the Rector of the Jagiellonian University Prof. Jacek Popiel
  • lecture on Aktion gegen Universitäts-Professoren (also known as Sonderaktion Krakau)  and its consequences by Prof. Paweł Sękowski
  • performance of Krzysztof Penderecki’s Agnus Dei by artists from the Academy of Music in Kraków
  • reading of the Roll of Honour
  • laying of wreaths under memorial plaques in Collegium Novum: commemorating the victims of Sonderaktion Krakau, in room 56, where the professors were arrested in 1939, honouring the murdered professors of the John Casimir University in Lvov; and commemorating the victims of Katyn massacre,
  • laying of a wreath at the Oak of Freedom

  • Holy Mass for the victims of Sonderaktion Krakau, members of Kraków academic community who died in the Second World War, and all professors, staff members and students of Kraków higher education institutions who passed away during the previous academic year
