Professor Janusz Kozłowski becomes the President of the International Union of Academies

Professor Janusz Kozłowski, an eminent archeologists from the JU Institute of Archeology, was chosen the president of the International Union of Academies (Union Academique Internationale), one of the most important academic institutions in the world. It is located in Brussels (see the IUA Web site)

The Union was founded in 1919, by, among other institutions, the Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences (PAU), the representative and member of which is professor Kozłowski. The Union is made up by more than 70 academies from 39 countries and cooperates with other institutions on developing and financing international programmes in the humanities, such as philology and philosophy and in social and political sciences. There are several projects currently financed by the Union.


The new president of the Union is an archeologist, whose research work has focused on the Stone Age, especially on the shift from the Middle to the Upper Paleolithic, the beginnings of homo sapiens sapiens, cultural diversity on the Upper Paleolithic, the Neolithization of the Central Europe and on the archeology of Central America. He worked at many archeological sites, including those in Poland, Egypt, Bulgaria, Greece and Turkey. He lectured at the universities in Liege, Brussels, Ghent, College de France, Harvard University (Cambridge). He holds an honorary doctorate from the university in Bordeaux and is a member of many associations and academic institutions. He has published extensively and tutored many PhD students.
