Jagiellonian University ranked first by the National Science Centre

The Jagiellonian University is ranked first on the list of leaders in basic research, recently published by the National Science Centre.

The National Science Centre has ranked Polish scientific centres according to the number of research grants they have received and their overall value. The Jagiellonian University has taken first place in both categories, having received 409 grants worth 156 million zlotys altogether.

According to the Head of the National Science Centre, Prof. Andrzej Jajszczyk, the Jagiellonian University owes its success largely to the reincorporation of medical specialities into its framework. It is also worth noting that the Jagiellonian University Medical College was ranked first when it comes to the number and overall value of grants for research projects run by medical higher education institutions (JU MC received grants for 66 projects worth 30 million zlotys altogether).

The National Science Centre (NCN) is a government executive agency set up to fund basic research, that is the original experimental or theoretical research work undertaken primarily to acquire new knowledge of the underlying foundations of phenomena and observable facts, usually without direct practical application or use.

The budget of National Science Centre is as high as about 900 million zlotys, and its grants have become one of the important sources of income of the most successful scientific institutions in Poland. The recipients are selected on the basis of their estimated potential to use the funds to the best effect.
