Visit from Radboud University Nijmegen (The Netherlands)

On 14 October 2010 the Jagiellonian University hosted an 11-person delegation from the Radboud University Nijmegen, the Netherlands. It was a working visit of the Radboud University Directors (operational) Management, headed by the Secretary General and Head of Administration Dr. Jef van de Riet. The remaining members of the delegation were the Directors: of Finance, Personnel Department, Real Estate and Facility Management as well as the Managing Directors of the following Faculties: Social Sciences, Science, Law, Philosophy, Theology, Religious Studies, Arts, Management and the Head of the International Office.
The aim of the visit was to get to know the Jagiellonian University, its structure and management, exchange experiences concerning management of institutions of higher education and discuss possibilities of collaboration between our universities and within the framework of the IRUN network.

The proposed topics for discussion embraced five areas:
1. Organization of the university: administrative structure of the university, executive board; university council, supervisory board;
2. Government – University Relationship: legislation;
3. Funding and financing of the university: government, tuition and fees, research resources, contract research and distribution of funds within the university;
4. HR management and staff policy: rules and regulations, services;
5. Housing and management of property: organization, development of plans and project management, facility management and services.

The schedule included a visit to the JU Museum in Collegium Maius, a plenary session with representatives of the JU Governance (Vice-Rector Prof. A. Mania and Chancellor Dr. T. Skarbek) and of the administration (international office, HR office and structural funds office). There were power point presentations depicting the structures, statistical data and achievements of both universities. Then there were separate meetings between the counterparts at the faculties or at other appropriate offices. Three members of the RU delegation had the chance to see the JU new campus. The working day was finished with a plenary session in Collegium Novum to exchange and discuss the findings.
Besides the working meetings the delegation from the Radboud University Nijmegen had the chance to get a glimpse of the JU Professors' Garden and the Kraków monuments: the Market Square, St Mary's, the Barbican and the Wawel Castle. The day before the delegation visited the former Nazi concentration camp in Auschwitz-Birkenau.
Summing up, for the representations of both universities it was interesting to learn about the Dutch and Polish university systems, to discuss their daily work within the framework of entirely different university systems and history as well as to gain a new view on university structure and circumstances, which contributes to the internationalisation of both universities.
