Professor Skalski and the team from the Children's University Hospital recognised in Złoty Skalpel Competition

This year's edition of Złoty Skalpel (Golden Scalpel) competition recognised the team of invasive cardiologis led by Prof dr hab. n. med Janusz Skalski from the University Children Hospital in Kraków. The jury has appraised the innovativeness of the procedure involving the implantation of artificial heart ventricle in young patients. The procedure was performed on 13-month-old Zuzia, 3-year-old Kacper and 6-year-old Ania. In all these cases, the operation enabled the children to wait until a heart donor appears.

The members of the jury stress that the choice of the winner was very difficult. Out of 24 submitted projects the jury has selected 10, which went through to the second round of the competition. They represented a wide range of medical sciences – from dermatology and cardiology to diabetology, orthopaedics and technological aids supporting medicine. The team of winners received a grant of PLN 10 000 funded by a strategic partner of the Złoty Skalpel Competition – GlaxoSmithKline company.
