Plus Ratio Quam Vis medal for the University of St Andrews

On 13-14 September 2013, JU Vice-Rector for Educational Affairs, Professor Andrzej Mania visited the University of St Andrews to attend the celebration of the University's 600th anniversary.

Founded in 1413, the University of St Andrews is Scotland's first university and the third oldest in the English speaking world. The university is situated on the east coast of Scotland in the heart of historic St. Andrews and enjoys great popularity among foreign students. It is one of the European universities that are top rated for research, teaching quality and student satisfaction and is consistently ranked among the UK's top five in the leading independent league tables produced by The Times, The Guardian and The Sunday Times.

The celebration commenced with a thanksgiving service in Holy Trinity Church. On the same day during a Special Graduation Ceremony 17 distinguished scholars and thinkers were awarded an Honorary Degree from the University of St Andrews. Among those great minds were:

  • The Honourable Hillary Rodham Clinton, former United States Secretary of State
  • Professor Mary Beard, classicist
  • Professor E Nigel Harris, Vice-Chancellor of the University of the West Indies and medic
  • The Right Revd Dr Rowan Williams, former Archbishop of Canterbury
  • Dame Jane Goodall, primatologist and conservationist
  • Sir Tim Berners-Lee, inventor of the World Wide Web
  • Professor Sir Timothy Gowers, Fields Medal prize winner (1998),
  • Professor Ram Rao, chemist
  • Professor Sir Michael Rutter, the father of modern child psychiatry.

The second day of the celebrations the University hosted three open forum discussions to debate pressing contemporary issues and concerns for the future. During one of the sessions Professor Mania conferred Plus Ratio Quam Vis medal upon the University of St Andrews. Dr Louise Richardson, Vice-Chancellor of St Andrews, received the award on behalf of the whole St Andrews community. The prize, whose name means "let reason prevail over force", recognises individuals and institutions which uphold the best academic traditions.
