JU students among the best programmers in the world

The Jagiellonian University team won a bronze medal in the International Collegiate Programming Contest finals in Orlando, USA.  24,915 programmers grouped in 8,305 teams took part in the contest this year. They represented 2,070 Universities from 88 countries from six continents.

The JU team consisted of:

  • Robert Obryk,
  • Adam Polak,
  • Maciej Wawro,
  • Prof. Paweł Idziak, Coach

They proved to be among the best programmers in the world.

Before reaching the finals, the participants had to come through the qualifiers. The University of Wrocław and The University of Warsaw also competed in the finals. However, they did not perform as well as the JU.

Each team consisted of three students. With only one computer at their disposal and a five hour deadline, they were supposed to solve about a dozen complex programming problems. Hence, they also had to prove efficient in teamwork and work against the clock.

ICPC dates back to 1977. Before 1989 its scope was limited to the USA and Canada. Since that year the contest has had a truly international character. Sponsored by the IBM since 1997, it is the world's biggest and most prestigious programming competition for universities. The regional qualifications are hosted by a network of universities from all over the world.

Further information on ICPC available at its official website.
