The Jagiellonian University looks to the future

When asked about the most important criteria of their choice of a study programme, most young people point to the individual skills and interests, the courses offered, and the job opportunities for graduates.

The Jagiellonian University surveyed more than 480 secondary school students from Cracow and the neighbouring areas. They were asked about the criteria they use to choose higher education institution in general, and the Jagiellonian Universtity in particular as well as about the decisive factors in their choice of study programme, and the relation between this choice and their future career plans.

It turns out that the vast majority of students (91%) take into account their future career when choosing a higher education programme. Three quarters of the respondents believe that the choice of a study programme determines the future career, and more than a half of them think that the choice of a higher education institution matters in this respect.

More than a half of the people surveyed claim that studying at the Jagiellonian University would boost their chances for a successful career in future. The oldest higher education institution in Poland is also considered attractive because of the courses it offers, its high standard of teaching, and the opportunities to develop individual interests and passions it gives.

The findings of the research were presented at a press conference held in Collegium Novum on June 14. The rector of the JU, Prof. Karol Musioł explained that the research was conducted to explore young people's motivation behind their tertiary education choices and thus better fit the University's programme offer to their needs. He also highlighted the JU campaign aimed at helping young people to consciously choose the path of their education and career. The rector stressed that "The Jagiellonian University, although proud of its history, is primarily oriented towards the future."

The latest promotional campaign of the JU "Check out your future" enables the present and prospective JU students to foresee their future career in a form of a game. On the interactive website www.przyszlosc.uj.edu.pl they can choose their study programme and find out, whether they have a chance to become a famous journalist, an expert on Eastern European politics, or the Administrator of NASA.
