JU Physicists join Open Access initiative

1 January 2014 sees the start of SCOAP3 initiative, run under the auspices of CERN research centre. The project will make a large proportion of texts from the field of high-energy physics available to the general public on Open Access basis. Everybody will have free access to the articles and research results, and the authors of the papers will retain their copyright. It should be stressed that the group of ten, carefully selected, scientific journals to be co-funded and made available to the public includes Acta Physica Polonica B, published by the Jagiellonian University in collaboration with the Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences.

SCOAP3 is a unique partnership of thousands of libraries, key funding agencies, and research centers in two dozen countries. Working with leading publishers, SCOAP3 is converting key journals in the field of high-energy physics to Open Access at no cost for authors. SCOAP3 is centrally paying publishers for the costs involved in providing Open Access. The publishers in turn reduce subscription fees to their customers who contribute to SCOAP3. Each country participates in a way commensurate with its scientific output in this field. In addition, the existing Open Access journals are also centrally supported, removing any existing financial barrier for authors.

Acta Physica Polonica covers such areas as: elementary particles theory, field theory, nuclear physics, relativity theory and statistical physics. The journal is published in English by the Jagiellonian University. Its editorial board is headed by Prof. Michał Praszałowicz. It should be noted that the access to the journal's articles has been open for nearly 15 years. CERN has described the periodical as a "high quality international journal" in a press release, and listed it among the „key journals" on its website.
