New interesting initiatives by the JU Polish Research Centre in London

An international conference of the JU Polish Research Centre in London was held on November 30 at the School of Slavonic and East European Studies (SSEES), University College London. The guests from the British and Polish higher education institutions tried to find an answer to the question: "Do the Humanities have a Nationality?" The meeting was led by Dr Richard Butterwick-Pawlikowski of UCL SSEES, the opening lecture was given by Dr Anne White of the University of Bath, and then Prof. Arkady Rzegocki of the Jagiellonian University presented the results of a report on the educational needs of Poles living in the UK. The second part of the conference consisted of two discussion panels, featuring speakers from both Polish and British universities: Dr Urszula Chowaniec, Dr Elwira Grossman, Dr Katarzyna Zechenter, Dr John Bates, Prof. Artur Andrzejuk, Prof. Radosław Żurawski vel Grajewski, Prof. Artur Wołek, Dr Izabella Andrzejuk, Dr Maciej Drzonek, Dr Maciej Dybowski, Dr Błażej Sajduk, Dr Przemysław Żurawski vel Grajewski, and Mr Marcin Kędzierski.

On December 7, another (tenth) Jagiellonian Lecture was held at the Polish Research Centre in London. It was organised by the Centre, in collaboration with the Union of Polish Writers Abroad and was not a typical academic lecture, as the meeting with Dr Antoni Libera, a well known writer, translator of Samuel Becket's works, literary scholar, film director and actor, begun with a performance in which he acted out part of Krapp's Last Tape by Samuel Becket. Then Dr Libera discussed the main character's features as well as his interpretation of the role and the means of expression he employed during the performance. The fragments of other performances of this play, from different countries, were also presented. After the lecture, during the informal part of the meeting, the participants could buy Antoni Libera's books with the author's signature.

The most recent initiative by the Polish Research Centre in London has been the production of the film "Five Minds of Polish Science", which presents major discoveries by selected Polish scholars and scientists, such as Józef Hofmann, Stefan Kudelski, Jacek Karpiński, Andrzej Czyżewski i Marcin Jakubowski. The making of the film has been funded by the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
