2014 proclaimed the year of the Great Jubilee of the Jagiellonian University

On 18 December 2013 the Senate of the Republic of Poland announced that 2014 will be the year of the Great Jubilee of the Jagiellonian University.

In the resolution, the senators pointed to the great significance of the 650th anniversary of the foundation of the University in Kraków and the vital role the institution has played in the history of Poland as the breeding ground for the intellectual elite, which has enormously contributed to the development of science and education throughout the region. It was the JU Faculties that gave birth to many other higher education institution and the JU scholars that laid the foundation for other academic centres in Poland.

The resolution also stresses that today the 650-year old University once again flourishes, with more than four thousand academics and fifty thousand students engaged in teaching, learning and research.

In 1364 the University in Kraków was founded by king Casimir the Great. Chronologically speaking, it was the second such institutions in Central Europe, after the University of Prague. The university's refoundation by queen Jadwiga and king Władysław Jagiełło in 1400 marked the beginning of its Golden Age.

All 57 senators present at the session voted for the resolution.
