Chinese Studies – a new speciality at the JU Institute of Oriental Studies

The educational offer of the Department of Japanology and Sinology at the JU Institute of Oriental Studies is expanding to include a new undergraduate study programme: Chinese Studies (Sinology). The students who enrol on the three-year course will learn spoken and written Chinese language to a level that will enable them to engage in effective verbal and intercultural communication. Besides, the students will gain insight into the Chinese-speaking culture by learning the cognitive and perceptive mechanisms of the society and the individual that stem from the specific features of the Chinese writing and lexicon, as well as the tradition reflected in the language. Mastery of the language is the key to understanding its roots: the people, the country, and the culture – both historically and today.

The curriculum contains an intense Chinese language course, including knowledge of the language and its acquisition, the Chinese writing systems, the rudiments of classical Chinese language, as well as language exercises (including speaking, writing, reading and translation). The programme also includes subjects on the history and culture of China, as well as some more general subjects, such as linguistics or philosophy, to provide students with a solid background in humanities, both in Eurocentric and Sinocentric perspective.

The JU Institute of Oriental Studies is also planning to open the second-cycle programme to provide the Sinology students with the opportunity to continue their course at the graduate level.

The registration for the programme, along with the more detailed information, is available under this link.
