Book on blood vessel formation mechanisms edited by JU scientists

A publication entitled Angiogenesis and Vascularisation: Cellular and Molecular Mechanisms in Health and Diseases, edited by Prof. Józef Dulak, Prof. Alicja Józkowicz and Dr Agnieszka Łoboda from the JU Department of Medical Biotechnology, was issued by the Springer publishing company.

Formation of blood vessels is essential for the development of the human body, many diseases are accompanied by disorders of this process. The publication is directed towards readers interested in biology and vascular medicine – not only experienced researchers, but students as well. In the eighteen chapters of the book, an international group of scholars discuss the current state of knowledge about this rapidly developing academic field, bordering on molecular biology, biotechnology and medicine. Readers interested in the role of angiogenesis in circulatory system diseases, diabetes, cancer and rheumatoid arthritis will surely want to study the chapters that concern molecular and cellular basis of angiogenesis as well as those that are devoted to the disorders of blood vessel formation and methods of treating them.

The publication is an acknowledgement of the Kraków research team's contribution to science, since the results of their study may be a basis for further research on various methods of treatment (including cancer treatment). The Department of Medical Biotechnology also conducts joint research with the Selvita biotechnological company as part of the National Centre of Research and Development grant.

In 2011, the Department organised the sixth edition of the European Vascular Biology Meeting. Prof. Józef Dulak has been the President of the European Vascular Biology Organisation since 2013.
