PET-CT (Positron Emission Tomography-Computed Tomography) system has been officially put into operation in the Institute of Nuclear Medicine of the Endocrinology Clinic, University Hospital, in Kraków.

The event was accompanied by the conference held in the Didactic and Congress Centre of the Faculty of Medicine, which was attended by the university governance, local authorities, NHS representatives and hospital and clinic managers.

PET-CT system is a hybrid device combining PET scanner with high quality 128-slice computed tomography. PET-CT allows the acquisition of specialist and precise data about cancerous changes. This noninvasive diagnostic imaging procedure helps to detect cancer, assess the advancement of illness and evaluate the effectiveness of treatment. The device operating in the University Hospital has been enriched with respiratory gating technology which detects even the smallest lung tumors invisible to other imaging procedures. Conducting biopsy tests or planning radiotherapy with the support of PET will contribute to the maximum therapeutic effect whilst keeping damage to the healthy tissue to a minimum. The device will find application not only in oncology but also neurology and cardiology.
