Swedish expert on endocrine surgery visits JU

Professor Anders Bergenfelz came to Kraków within the framework of OMICRON project, aimed to foster the exchange of knowledge and experience between the JU Medical College and foreign research centres. On September 16, the Swedish scientist delivered a lecture in the Assembly Hall of JU MC Collegium Novodvorscianum, entitled Translational cancer genomics research. An editors perspective on how to attract a surgical readership and influence clinical practice. He also took a tour of the Jagiellonian University Museum Collegium Maius and was received by the JU Rector, Prof. Wojciech Nowak, who familiarised the honoured guest with the history of the oldest higher education institution in Poland. However, most of the talk focused on medical issues. The meeting also featured staff members of the Endocrine Surgery Clinic – Dr hab. Marcin Barczyński and Dr hab. Aleksander Konturek.

On Wednesday, September 17, Prof. Bergenfelz visited the JU MC 3rd Chair in General Surgery, the 1st Chair in General Surgery, as well as OMICRON genetic research lab, and met the heads of these units: Prof. Piotr Richter, Dr. Paweł Wołkow, and Prof. Jan Kulig. Prof. Bergenfelz's visit to Kraków concluded with the participation in the meeting of the Polish Society of Surgery, during which he delivered the guest lecture EUROCRINE - a joint endocrine surgical registry across many European countries: lessons learned so far.

Prof. Anders Bergenfelz of Skåne University Hospital specializes in endocrine surgery and surgical oncology. He is a member of the International Advisory Board of OMICRON project and the head of the international EUROCRINE project, which involves the JU MC Chair in General Surgery and is aimed at reducing endocrine tumours incidence and mortality rate by creating a European-wide database. He is also an editor of the British Journal of Surgery, a board member and the President-elect of the European Society of Endocrine Surgeons and a longtime Chairman of the Division of Endocrine Surgery at the European Union of Medical Specialists.
