Science Projector: science at the Jagiellonian University

Inside society, Past times / distant places, Naturescope, Discovery.med, Cancer: battle ideas – these are some of the chapter titles of the Science Projector's latest issue, in which the JU scientists describe 50 inspiring research projects and show what is new in the world of laboratories and libraries.

Short articles directed towards the general reader presented in Science Projector. What are scientists from the Jagiellonian University currently working on? were based upon revised articles from the Polish edition. They are grouped into 8 chapters, which may be seen as a kind of milestones on the map of the university's scientific activity. They are not an exhaustive reports, but rather snapshots which demonstrate trends and curious facts.

For instance, it is worth to mention the article entitled To hear the image, which is concerned with audiovisual description – a means for the visually impaired to be able to participate in certain activities, such as "watching" a film. In the biological and medical areas, the research on diagnosing sepsis and child leukaemia analysis are proving to be a breakthrough. MRI lung imaging is also a noteworthy subject, since this technology was previously inapplicable in this area of diagnostics.

As Prof. Stanisław Kistryn, JU Vice-Rector for Research and Structural Funds, wrote in the introduction to this publication, the Science Projector also plays another important role: it shows that science is fascinating and provides an opportunity to view the world from a different perspective.
