Prof. Piotr Hofmański elected to the International Criminal Court

Prof. Piotr Hofmański has become the first Polish judge of the International Criminal Court (established in 2002). His term will run from 2015 to 2024.

Prof. Hofmański is a judge of the Supreme Court of the Republic of Poland, a lecturer at the Jagiellonian Univeristy (Chair of Criminal Procedure at the Faculty of Law and Administration), and an expert to the Council of Europe. Since 17 November 2013 he has been the Head of the Criminal Law Codification Committee at the Polish Ministry of Justice.

He is one of the best and most experienced Polish experts in criminal procedure in and has the qualifications required to occupy the highest judicial positions in Poland. His career as a judge began in 1994 in Białystok Appeal Court. Since 1996 he has been the judge of the Criminal Chamber of the Supreme Court.  He is the author of more than 200 publications on various aspects of substantive and procedural criminal law.

The new judge was elected by a two-thirds majority. The campaign promoting the Polish candidate was run by the Legal and Treaty Department of the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, under the supervision of the Deputy Secretary of State, Prof. Artur Nowak-Fara.

The International Criminal Court was established by the states parties to the Rome Statute in order to try individuals accused of committing the gravest international crimes. The seat of the Court is The Hague.
