Innovative treatment at the University Hospital

The vascular surgery team of the Jagiellonian University Hospital has been the first in Małopolska region and one of the first in Poland to use the new method of removing thrombi from the pulmonary arteries: the pharmacochemical thrombolysis and thromboaspiration with AngioJet system. The method is applicable when the thrombus is no more than two-weeks-old.  Pulmonary embolism is a common ailment that poses high risk of premature death.

People diagnosed with high-risk pulmonary artery embolism are more and more often qualified for intense pharmacomechanical treatment. One of the possible ways of this kind of therapy is to use the mechanical thrombectomy AngioJet Ultra.

The system is one of the most advanced means of restoring the flow of blood in clotted arteries and veins. A special device is used for the mechanical fragmentation of a thrombus located in these blood vessels by means of a high-pressure stream of water. A thrombolytic drug can be additionally used. This has two advantages: firstly, the better penetration of the drug and secondly, the increased safety of treatment thanks to the dose, which is often very small. Finally, the fragmented thrombus is removed from the vessel by the suction system. The treatment is low-invasive and there is little risk involved.
