JU Institute of Oriental Studies officially opens its 96th academic year

On 2 October 2015, the opening ceremony of the 96th academic year at the Institute of Oriental Studies was held in Collegium Novum Assembly Hall.

Apart from students and staff, the event was also attended by Prof. Wojciech Nowak, JU Rector, and Prof. Elżbieta Górska, Dean of the Faculty of Philology.

The meeting began with an opening address by Prof. Barbara Michalak-Pikulska, Head of the Institute of Oriental Studies. After that, Prof. Wojciech Nowak delivered a short speech, in which he welcomed new students to the Jagiellonian University and emphasised the importance of their academic field. Prof. Elżbieta Górska then mentioned the institute's particularly rich study programme offer and teaching standards.

The opening was followed by a lecture entitled "Language and Identity," delivered by Prof. Lutz Rzehak from the Humboldt University of Berlin. The lecture was focused on the issues of language definition and the relationship between language and identity.
