JU researchers help develop a railgun

JU researchers help develop a railgun

On 2 December 2015, Prof. Stanisław Kistryn, JU Vice-Rector for Research and Structural Funds, represented the Jagiellonian University at an official signing of a letter initiating the project aimed to develop a Polish railgun, which took place at the Military University of Technology in Warsaw.

The development of a railgun is organised within the framework of a programme entitled Systemy magazynowania i przetwarzania wysokich energii pod kątem praktycznego wykorzystania w gospodarce narodowej oraz w obszarze obronności i bezpieczeństwa państwa – K-DELM [Practical applications of high energy storage and processing systems in national economy and security]. In his opening speech, Prof. Zygmunt Mierczyk, major-general and rector of the Military University of Technology, said that the idea of developing a railgun is not new, but it is only now that the circumstances became favourable for such an endeavour.

The document was signed by 18 Polish research and industrial centres.
