Days of American Culture at JU

Days of American Culture at JU

The 8th Days of American Culture were held at the Jagiellonian University from April 27 to 29, 2016. This year's event was entirely devoted to the American Film Industry.

As in previous years, the event was opened by the JU Vice-Rector for Educational Affairs Prof. Andrzej Mania, who is the head and one of the co-founders of the JU Chair in American Studies. In his address, he pointed out that the idea to establish the chair stemmed from the desire of JU academics and students to explore various aspects of the American culture and understand the policy of the United States as a superpower. He also stressed that the activity of the JU American Studies Student Academic Society, which co-organised the event, together with the JU Institute of American Studies and Polish Diaspora, shows the passion and dedication of the students.

The central part of the Days of American Culture was the two-day interdisciplinary conference Hollywood – Making America. Cinema in History, Culture and Society of the United States, consisting of several sessions devoted to such fields as culture, society, politics and history. The discussion was accompanied by film screenings, and addresses by special guests.
