Second Master's Summer School on Teaching about the Holocaust at the JU

The course was aimed at providing Polish teachers with in-depth information and specific educational tools, methods and strategies that are effective while teaching about the Holocaust, the genocide of the Roma and human rights in 21st century classroom.

From 1 to 4 July 2016 the second edition of the Master Programme Teaching about the Holocaust was held at the Centre for Holocaust Studies of the Jagiellonian University. The course was primarily addressed to secondary and high school teachers, leaders of local communities, cultural institutions staff and NGO members. The project was co-organised by the UNESCO Chair in Education about the Holocaust as well as American and German  partner institutions, including the Koret Foundation and the German foundation Erinnerung, Verantwortung und Zukunft (Memory, Respoonsibility, Future), which both provided funding for the course.

The opening session of the course, which took place on 1 July 2016, featured the Director of the JU Centre for Holocaust Studies Dr hab. Jolanta Ambrosewicz-Jacobs, the Ambassador of Israel to Poland Anna Azari, the Consul General of Germany to Kraków Dr Werner Köhler, the Consul General of the USA to Kraków Walter Braunohler and Orit Margaliot from the Jad Vashem Institute, Jerusalem.

The course was aimed at providing Polish teachers with in-depth information and specific educational tools, methods and strategies that are effective while teaching about the Holocaust, the genocide of the Roma and human rights in 21st century classroom. The Programme agenda comprises  workshops, presentations, discussions, film screenings and a field trip to the former Jewish ghetto in Cracow (Podgórze) and the former German Nazi concentration camp in Płaszów.

The second edition of the Master Programme Teaching about the Holocaust took place under the honorary auspices  of the Governor of  the Małopolska Voivodeship Józef Pilch and the Marshal of the Małopolska Voivodeship Jacek Krupa.
