The Jagiellonian University to organise a course on language and culture for foreigners

The Ministry of Science and Higher Education has announced that this year’s edition of the ‘School of Polish language and culture for foreigners – Romance Course 2017’ project will be organised by the Jagiellonian University’s School of Polish Language and Culture.

Romance Course 2017 is a course aimed for outstanding students of Polish language and Polish Studies at foreign higher education institutions. It will be organised during the winter break in January and February. According to the Ministry’s announcement, 35 students will participate in the course at four levels: A2, B1, B2, and C1.

The minimum requirements for the completion of the course are: 45 hours of language classes, 15 additional hours of classes related to language (contemporary Polish, translation, history of Polish literature, rhetoric, Polish national songs and dances, selected aspects of Polish contemporary literature), 30 hours of classes on Polish history (Polish-Italian relations, Polish-French relations, Polish-Spanish relations, famous Poles in the history and culture of Romance countries, history of Poland, religion in Poland, history of Polish culture, history of Polish Jews, contemporary Polish cinematography, political and economic transformations in Poland after 1980), as well as 9 hours of cultural activities (trips, theatre, cinema).

This is the third time that the Jagiellonian University was appointed by the Ministry to organise the Romance Course. JU School of Polish Language and Culture is the oldest of its kind in Poland. It was established in 1969, but its beginnings can be traced back to the 1930s. It offers course in Polish for foreigners supplemented with lectures on history, art, sociology, politics, and economy. Aside from a rich programme, the School also organises trips to the most interesting sites in Kraków and its neighbourhood.

In 2000, the Ministry of Science and Higher Education awarded the JU School of Polish Language and Culture for its outstanding contributions to promotion of Poland in the world. In 2002, 2005 and 2008, the School was also presented with the European Label diploma for innovative methods of teaching.
