Jagiellonian University delegation visits Cyprus

Jagiellonian University delegation visits Cyprus

On invitation of Paphos City Council and Mayor Fedonas Fedonos, the delegation from the Jagiellonian University took part in the celebrations marking the city’s becoming the European Capital of Culture on January 28-29. In 2017 the Cypriot city will bear this prestigious title together with Aarhus in Denmark.

The Dean of the JU Faculty of History Prof. Jan Święch, the faculty’s Vice-Dean Prof. Stanisław Sroka and the Head of the JU Department of Classical Archaeology Prof. Ewdoksia Papuci-Władyka attended the two-day celebrations and met with the Mayor and members of the City Council, with whom they discussed further cooperation between Paphos and the Jagiellonian University and the promotion of achievements of JU archaeologists working in the Paphos Agora Project. The researchers who are part of the expedition collaborate with artists to create innovative audiovisual means of interpreting cultural heritage, which will be presented during public performances and exhibitions in Paphos as well as exhibitions and meetings related to the project in Kraków.

The interdisciplinary international archaeological research on Cyprus have been run under the supervision of Prof. Ewdoksia Papuci-Władyka since 2011. The excavations have been carried out in the central part (agora) of ancient Paphos as well as several other areas. The city, whose monuments have been inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List, was the capital of Cyprus during the Hellenistic and Roman period.
