JU hosts a conference on Katherine Mansfield

JU hosts a conference on Katherine Mansfield

On 5 July 2019, the international conference devoted to the life and work of Katherine Mansfield – a distinguished New Zealand modernist short story writer and poet - was officially opened at the Jagiellonian University. The participants were addressed by the JU Rector Prof. Wojciech Nowak and the Ambassador of New Zealand to Poland Mary Thurston.

The attendees gathered in the historic assembly hall of Collegium Maius were welcomed by the Vice-Dean of the JU Faculty of Philology Prof. Władysław Witalisz, who gave the floor to the JU Rector Prof. Wojciech Nowak. In his address, Prof. Nowak pointed to the significance of organising the conference in Kraków, the city of Stanisław Wyspiański – a prominent Polish writer and artist who fascinated Katherine Mansfield and to whom she addressed one of her poems. The Rector expressed his happiness with the presence of a number of eminent guests, including the Ambassador of New Zealand to Poland and many distinguished literary scholars from various parts of the world. The conference participants were also addressed by Ambassador Mary Thurston, who thanked all those who have contributed to the organisation of the conference and wished all attendees insightful and fruitful discussion.

The topics discussed during the three-day conference, entitled Katherine Mansfield: Inspirations and Influences, include the writer’s work in the context of modernism, her literary inspirations, the influence she had on other writers, the relation between Katherine Mansfield’s writing and other arts, her links with Poland, as well as various themes present in her work, including war, violence, illness, and colonialism. The event is co-organised by the Jagiellonian University, the Catholic University in Ruzomberok, Slovakia, and the Katherine Mansfield Society. The detailed programme is available on the society’s website.
