For the third time in Poland and the first time in Kraków, specialists in the area of biology and medicine met at the Congress of the Federation of European Biochemical Societies. The six day meeting, this year organised by the Polish Biochemical Society, was officially opened at the ICE Kraków Congress Centre.
The Federation of European Biochemical Societies (FEBS) has become one of Europe's largest organisations in the molecular life sciences, with over 35,000 members across more than 35 biochemistry and molecular biology societies (its 'Constituent Societies') in different countries of Europe and neighbouring regions. In its many programmes and projects, it places an emphasis on scientific exchange and cooperation between scientists working in different countries, and on promotion of the training of early-career scientists.
‘On behalf of the whole academic community of the Jagiellonian University and myself, I would like to cordially welcome all the participants of the 44th Congress of the Federation of European Biochemical Societies to Kraków, which has the privilege to host the event for the first time in its several-decades-long history’, said JU Rector Prof. Wojciech Nowak. ‘Over 1800 participants from all over the world covering all fields of modern biochemistry, cell and molecular biology, pharmacy, and medicine, with 170 distinguished speakers among them, including Nobel Prize Laureates presenting at over 65 scientific sessions and numerous accompanying events. I am overjoyed that we can be a part of this scientific feat as it will not only allow our guests a glimpse of what Kraków and the Jagiellonian University have to offer, but also will undoubtedly be a source of great inspiration for the local academia’, he added.
The theme of this year’s Congress is From molecules to living systems. The participants will debate on topics related to broadly understood biochemistry, molecular biology, plan biology and biochemistry, environmental sciences, biotechnology, and bioinformatics. They will also discuss issues linked to medicine, and pharmacy as well as medical, plant, and industrial biotechnology. The 37 sessions encompass 5 parallel sections as well as several poster sessions. Moreover, a specialised exhibition will also be a part of the event.
Among the many eminent scientists representing various fields of molecular life sciences that will participate in the Congress there are two Nobel Laureates: Andrew Z. Fire (Stanford), who delivered the the Opening Lecture on 6 July, and Venkatraman Ramakrishnan (Cambridge, UK), who will be the final speaker of the conference.
