JU researchers discover how melatonin affects cell pigmentation

JU researchers discover how melatonin affects cell pigmentation

The Journal of Pineal Research published a paper on the role of melatonin in cell pigmentation, co-authored by Dr Michał Sarna and Krystian Mokrzyński from the Department of Biophysics of the JU Faculty of Biochemistry, Biophysics and Biotechnology. The article is a collaboration between researchers from the University of Munster, University of Texas, University of Alabama and the Jagiellonian University.

The mechanisms regulating the synthesis of melanin in human cells have been studied for years. In their latest article, the authors have proved that melatonin, which is produced by the pineal gland and governs controls our biological clock, may also affect the synthesis of melanin.
