Renowned semiotician Massimo Leone visits the Jagiellonian University

On February 24-25, on the invitation of the Institute of the Middle and Far East, Professor Massimo Leone, a world-famous semiotician, researcher of cultural and visual semiotics at the University of Turin (Italy) and the University of Shanghai (China), visited the Jagiellonian University.

Prof. Leone holds a double doctorate: in Religious Studies (University of Sorbonne) and in Art History (University of Friborg). In his academic work, he focuses on the role of religion in contemporary cultures. Massimo Leone is the author of eight books and over four hundred articles in the field of semiotics and religious studies. He has also edited thirty collective volumes. He has lectured in Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe and the Americas. In 2018, he won the prestigious ERC Consolidator Grant.

Prof. Massimo Leone has spent the last 5 months as a Visiting Senior Professor at the Polish Institute of Advanced Studies, Warsaw (PIASt) where he conducted his research on Democracy and Trolling in the Internet Communication.

During the visit to the Jagiellonian University, Prof. Leone met with students and staff on two occasions: on February 24 he inaugurated a new semester at the Institute of the Middle and Far East with a lecture entitled Semiotic Ideologies of the Face across Religious Cultures. The next day, at the Institute of Journalism, Media and Social Communication, he delivered a talk on Mediation and Intermediation of the Face in the Digital Imagery.
