JU MC researchers join the COST VascAgeNet project

JU MC researchers join the COST VascAgeNet project

Creating a European network of centres for vascular aging research is the main aim of the new COST VascAgeNet project – Network for Research in Vascular Ageing. Prof. Piotr Jankowski from the JU MC Institute of Cardiology was named the project coordinator for Poland.

Cardiovascular diseases are the main cause of illness and death around the world, regardless of sex, ethnic background and financial status. The theory that ‘vascular age’ is more closely related to heart and cerebral stroke and the overall length of life than chronological age is evolving rapidly. Arterial stiffness is an important factor in vascular aging and is becoming an increasingly popular treatment target. The aim of the research will be to develop and perfect methods of measuring the extent of vascular aging and ways to prevent it.

VascAgeNet is coordinated by the European Cooperation in Science and Technology (COST) and brings together experts in basic and clinical research as well as epidemiology from a number of European countries as well as the United States and Australia.
