Due to the SARS-CoV-2 epidemic, the Botanical Garden of the Jagiellonian University has not yet been opened for the new season and it is not yet clear when it will happen. Hence, we are presenting the photo gallery of selected plants from the garden blooming in April. This spring, because of a mild winter, many species flowered a little earlier than usual.
Even though the JU Botanic Garden remains closed, the recent weeks have been very busy for its staff. There have been ongoing works related to the revitalisation of the Japanese garden and the removal of the excessively expansive reeds at the large pond next to the arboretum. The gardeners have replanted the calabash tree (Crescentia cujete L.) - a plant which comes from Central America, but feels very well in Kraków, as shown by the development of numerous fruit buds, growing straight from its trunk. The palm tree from Victoria greenhouse complex - Copernicia glabrescens – has also been moved to a larger pot. The plant, characterised by large circular fan leaves, is endemic to West and Central Cuba. The pool in the Jubilee greenhouse has also been rearranged.
As stressed by the Head of the JU Botanic Garden Prof. Józef Mika, the garden is ready for the new season and longs to see new visitors.
