On 24 June an open letter signed by 75 European scientists was published on the Nature journal website. The researchers call for the establishment of a European humanitarian foundation for the prevention of environmental and health crises. According to the signatories, the COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the limited coordination among European countries when they need to act quickly and forcefully in terms of humanitarian, medical or research assistance.
The researchers think that the recent epidemics is only a prelude to a wider crisis, related to environmental and climate changes. Hence, they endorse the establishment of an elastic and effective system for channelling help to those in greatest need, uniting the efforts of various European donors.
The letter was signed by scientists from various fields, including Nobel laureates and representatives of leading European universities, including three JU researchers: Prof. Józef Dulak, Prof. Jan Potempa, and Prof. Krzysztof Pyrć.
