JU researchers publish two articles in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology

Two articles by scientists from the Faculty of Biochemistry, Biophysics and Biotechnology of the Jagiellonian University have been published in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology monthly – a leading international periodical in the field of dermatology.

The first paper "Differences in Staining for Neutrophil Elastase and its Controlling Inhibitor SLPI Reveal Heterogeneity among Neutrophils in Psoriasis" is authored by researchers from the JU Department of Immunobiology under the supervision of Prof. Joanna Cichy. The scientists proved that the neutrophils infiltrating the skin in psoriasis are heterogenous based on the expression of neutrophil elastase and its inhibitor SLP1. Their research also indicated that these differences can influence the migration of low density granulocytes in skin and the later generation of neutrophil extracellular traps contributing to the pathology of psoriasis.

The second article, entitled "IL-17E (IL-25) and IL-17A Differentially Affect the Functions of Human Keratinocyte" resulted from the collaboration of Prof. Justyna Drukała from the Department of Cell Biology with researchers from the University of Geneva, including Dr Julia Borwczyk, a graduate of the JU Faculty of Biochemistry, Biophysics and Biotechnology. The paper discusses how interleukin-17 activates immune cells as well as directly increases proliferation, differentiation and migration of human keratinocytes in an autocrine manner (a hormone influences the cell where it is produced via receptors located on the same cell). These discoveries shed a new light on the changes in the epidermis in skin diseases with an overexpression of IL-17E, such  aspsoriasis, contact dermatitis, and atopic dermatitis and provide inside into various effects IL-17E can have on epidermal homeostasis.

It should also be noted that photographs from Dr Julia Borowczyk’s article made the cover of the July issue of the Journal of Investigative Dermatology.
