New imaging technique will help to diagnose cancer

New imaging technique will help to diagnose cancer

Research conducted by a group of scientists including Dr Tomasz Wróbel from the National Synchrotron Radiation Centre SOLARIS (Jagiellonian University) contributed to the improvement of imaging methods by creating a new technique, known as the confocal quantitative phase imaging. The studies leading to the development of this method have been described in the article published in Optica journal.

The new imaging technique will make it possible to facilitate cancer diagnosis by replacing the current practice of staining by dyes to visualize tissue morphology with quantitative optical measurements, providing high spatial resolution data (better than infrared imaging). Another advantage of the method is that it allows imaging without destroying the sample.

It is also worth noting that the technique can be potentially combined with the SOLAIR beamline, which is being built at SOLARIS.
