The participants of a tutoring programme run by the Jagiellonian University Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science have won six medals at the International Mathematical Olympiad. This year, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the participants solved problems in their home countries under the supervision of cameras and impartial observers.
In this year’s edition, gold medals were awarded to Juliusz Banecki and Łukasz Orski, silver medals – to Kosma Kasprzak, Piotr Kubaty and Radosław Żak, while Aleksandra Kowalska was presented with a bronze medal. In the general classification, Polish and Italian competitors took sixth place out of 105. They were outmatched by China, Russia, United States, South Korea, and Thailand. Five high school students from Poland (Juliusz Banecki, Kosma Kasprzak, Piotr Kubaty, Łukasz Orski and Radosław Żak) and one from Slovenia (Jan Genc) took part in the competition at the JU Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science. During their stay in Kraków, the young mathematicians were looked after two university students – Aliaksandra Novik and Vladyslav Zveryk. Dr Andrzej Grzesik from the JU Chair in Applied Mathematics, while Dr Maik Gröger from the University of Vienna served as the competition’s supervisor.
‘Yet again we can see that our innovative tutoring programme, which we established in 2017, as well as its accompanying events, such as the Jagiellonian Olympiad Workshop or the Jagiellonian Mathematical Tournament, are extremely impactful even outside of our university, becoming a platform for creative work for our staff and students and the most talented young mathematicians in the country’, reads the announcement posted by the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science.
Since the 2017/2018 academic year, the JU Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science takes under its wings the most mathematically talented high school students, mostly from southern Poland, by assigning to them tutors who help them improve their overall knowledge. The tutoring programme is based on individual meetings and on-line conversations. It is directed to the best students with notable accomplishments who feel that traditional after school activities and workshops are no longer satisfactory. Students may sign up for the tutoring programme at any time.
