3 JU projects to receive funding from the Polish-French “Polonium” programme

3 JU projects to receive funding from the Polish-French “Polonium” programme

The results of this year’s edition of the Polish-French Hubert Curien “Polonium” Partnership Programme, aimed at supporting the mobility of collaborating research teams, have been published. Out of a total of 20 winning projects, 3 have been co-authored by the Jagiellonian University researchers.

In Poland, the programme is run by the Polish National Agency for Academic Exchange, whereas in France it is coordinated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation.

This year, 54-Polish French research teams applied for Polonium funds, which was the highest number in 8 years. 20 of them will receive the grants. The two leading research disciplines are 1) chemistry and 2) biology, medicine and health.

Most of the Polish winning projects are run by the Jagiellonian University (3), Warsaw University of Life Sciences(2), and the the University of Wrocław (2), whereas in France the highest number of grants was won by researchers from the Claude Bernard University Lyon 1 (3), the University of Rennes 1 (3), the University of Lorraine (2) and the University of Orleans (2).

The JU winning projects include:

  • “Law and Sustainability: domestic and international perspectives”, coordinator: Prof. Piotr Szwedo  (Faculty of Law and Administration), run in collaboration with the University of Orleans (Centre de Recherche Juridique Pothier);
  • “Synthesis and characterisation of sensors for nitroreductase ‐ markers for advanced tumors”, coordinator: Prof. Małgorzata Brindell (Faculty of Chemistry), run in collaboration with the University of Orleans (Institut de Chimie Organique et Analytique);
  • “Recognition of specific anions through a new generation of calixarene based tweezers”, coordinator: Prof. Robert Podgajny (Faculty of Chemistry), run in collaboration with the University of Strasbourg.

The main goal of the Polonium bilateral exchange programme is to foster mobility of researchers within the framework of joint research programmes by Polish and French partners. The funds from bilateral agreements can only be spent for the mobility of participants itself – they do not cover the cost of research, although they can provide invaluable support in carrying it out.
