2 August 2021 marked the beginning of the 28th edition of the International Mathematics Competition for University Students (IMC). This year, the competition featured a record number of participants, with 590 students from almost 160 universities from around the world. Students from the Jagiellonian University Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science have achieved the highest score in ten years.
The five JU students, whose mentors were Dr Jakub Byszewski and Dr Leszek Pieniążek, were awarded with the grand first prize (Azur Đongalic) and the first prize (Jan Fornal, Vadym Koval, Anatoli Shatsila and Daniil Homza). It is worth mentioning that Jan Fornal as the recipient of both the JU scholarship and a special Dean’s fund for competition participants, while the other JU representatives receive the Franciszek Mertens Scholarship.
Aside from individual classifications, the participants of the competition were divided into 113 teams. The Jagiellonian University took the third place, right after the Saint Petersburg State University and the Israeli National Team. Other Polish universities that took part in the competition include the AGH University of Science and Technology, Nicolaus Copernicus University, University of Silesia and University of Warsaw.
