Prof. Reiner Schmidt awarded with JU honorary doctorate

On 15 October 2021, doctorate honoris causa of the Jagiellonian University was conferred upon Prof. Reiner Schmidt, eminent German expert on public law, economic law and environmental law, former JU visiting professor, co-initiator and organiser of academic collaboration between law faculties of the Jagiellonian University and the University of Augsburg.

The Jagiellonian University Senate decided to award Prof. Reiner Schmidt with the honorary doctorate following the motion put forward by the JU Faculty of Law and Administration. The title was conferred especially for his extraordinary academic achievements from the field of public law, economic law and environmental law, his active cooperation with the JU Faculty of Law and Administration, including the organisation of a series of Polish-German seminars (since 2001) and co-editing the Krakauer-Augsburger Rechtsstudien publication series, as well as promoting the Polish science and culture in Germany.

The title was awarded during a special session of the Jagiellonian University Senate in the historic Assembly Hall of JU Collegium Maius, chaired by the Rector of the Jagiellonian University Prof. Jacek Popiel.

In a laudatory address, Prof. Fryderyk Zoll from the JU Faculty of Law and Administration briefly presented the history of Prof. Schmidt’s contacts with the Jagiellonian University, leading to the development of long-term fruitful cooperation between law faculties of the oldest Polish university and the University of Augsburg, which continues to this day. Prof. Zoll discussed Reiner Schmidt’s academic achievements in a number of areas, including legal aspects of European integration, environmental law, and legal education.

In his address to the JU academic community Prof. Reiner Schmidt thanked the JU Faculty of Law and Administration for many years of fruitful partnership with the University of Augsburg. The ceremony concluded with his short lecture, entitled “Gehört die Geldpolitik vor den Richter?” (Should monetary policy be taken to court?).
