On 26 October in Collegium Maius, a meeting was held between the delegation of the management of the Facility for Antiproton Ion Research and the Jagiellonian University authorities, the aim of which was to sign a memorandum of understanding as well as an agreement on student and staff mobility. The oldest higher education institution in Poland was represented by JU Vice-Rector for Research Prof. Piotr Kuśtrowski.
The delegation was composed of the Scientific Managing Director of FAIR Prof. Paolo Giubellino, Technical Managing Director of FAIR Dr Jörg Blaurock and GETInvolved programme coordinator Dr Pradeep Ghosh. The signing of the agreement, which featured representatives of Jagiellonian University and JU Faculty of Physics, Astronomy and Applied Computer Science, was followed by a discussion on the role of the Jagiellonian University in FAIR, which, aside from the delegates and Prof. Kuśtrowski, also included Prof. Piotr Salabura, Prof. Zbigniew Majka and Alicja Nowakowska.
The Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research, currently being built in Darmstadt, Germany, will be one of the largest accelerator centres used in basic research. Since 2010, the Jagiellonian University has been coordinating the Polish participation in the FAIR initiative, with JU Faculty of Physics, Astronomy and Applied Computer Science working on several large projects related to the design of its scientific equipment.
The agreement will allow Jagiellonian University students and staff to make use of a wide variety of research opportunities offered by FAIR. In particular, young researchers will be able to take advantage of a dedicated internships and joint MA and PhD study programmes.
