JU student receives Yenching Academy scholarship

Igor Szpotakowski, a graduate of the Jagiellonian University Faculty of Law and Administration, has been awarded with a scholarship of the Yenching Academy, an elite research centre based at Peking University. He is the only Polish student to receive the scholarship this year.

79 out of 100 of this year’s scholarship recipients come from outside of China. Most of them have graduated from the University of Oxford, University College London, University of Cambridge, Stanford University, Harvard University and Sciences Po Paris.

The Yenching Academy programme is divided into 6 thematic groups: politics and international relations, philosophy and religion, literature and culture, law and society, history and archaeology, and economy and finance. Within the framework of his chosen area, law and society, Igor Szpotakowski will continue his research on Chinese law, focusing on the ‘green principles’ of the 2020 Chinese civil code.

Igor Szpotakowski has graduated in Law and Asian Studies from the Jagiellonian University. He has studied on foreign universities both in China (Shanghai University, Beijing Foreign Studies University) and the United Kingdom (University of Bristol, Nottingham Trent University). He is the head of the research department of the NGO Chinese Law Association as well as the chief researcher of a Diamond Grant project realised at the JU Faculty of Law and Administration. He has authored two books on Chinese law, co-authored two more, and written numerous papers on the legal system of the People’s Republic of China. He has also benefitted from the Ryoichi Sasakawa Young Leaders Fellowship Fund (SYLFF), receiving funding for his research on Chinese contract law at the University of Cambridge, University of Edinburgh and University of Bristol.
