Dr Kamil Pecela, a graduate of the JU Faculty of Polish Studies working with the JU Section of Culture of Lithuania, has received the Algis Kalėda Award, set up by the Institute of Lithuanian Literature and Folklore in Vilnius. The award was presented to him for his studies of Vilnius-based Polish and Lithuanian authors as well as his translations of Lithuanian literature and essays on Lithuanian culture.
The award’s namesake, Prof. Algis Kalėda (1954–2017), graduated in Lithuanian Studies from the University of Vilnius and Polish Studies at the Jagiellonian University. In the 1990s, he co-founded Polish Studies at the University of Vilnius. He wrote papers and books on Polish literature and translated Polish authors into Lithuanian, the prime examples being Czesław Miłosz and Wisława Szymborska.
Dr Kamil Pecela is a graduate of the JU Faculty of Polish Studies. In 2014, he successfully defended his PhD thesis on the works of Rafał Mackiewicz (Rapolas Mackonis) and literary life of Vilnius in the interwar period, written under the supervision of Prof. Andrzej Romanowski. The thesis earned him the Juliusz Bardach Award from the Grand Duchy of Lithuania Institute in Kaunas. He specialises in Lithuanian literature and culture. In 2019, he received an honorary diploma of the Lithuanian Culture Institute for his translations.
The award ceremony will be held on 29 December 2021 in the Vilnius Picture Gallery.
