JU student featured on Forbes’ 25 Under 25 list

JU student featured on Forbes’ 25 Under 25 list

Jagiellonian University doctoral student Igor Kaczmarczyk is one of the finalists of the fourth edition of the 25 Under 25 competition, a joint initiative of the Forbes magazine and the Polish branch of management consulting firm McKinsey & Company. The aim of the project is to find 25 young, ambitious people and showcase their achievements in Forbes.

25 Under 25 is the first such initiative on a global scale, first organised in 2018. It presents the achievements of 25 young people in five categories: business, new technologies, science, social activity and sustainable development and climate. In addition to gaining recognition, the winners also receive a 10,000 zloty scholarship. They also receive support from mentors for a year after the list is published. 25 Under 25 is an opportunity to meet influential people, establish a network of contacts and carry out various projects.

Igor Kaczmarczyk, a finalist in the category of science, believes one of his most important achievements to be his participation in discovering a new type of photosensitive proteins. Along with his team members, he was able to map out the three-dimensional atomic structure of a previously unknown protein complex, which in the future may be used to develop new molecular tools to be used in optogenetics. The resulting research paper will soon be published and available online. Currently, Igor Kaczmarczyk is focused on his PhD thesis, which involves CryoEM technology.

Igor Kaczmarczyk began his higher education at the Jagiellonian University Faculty of Biochemistry, Biophysics and Biotechnology. He then graduated from the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel, where he was involved in studying the structural biology of membrane proteins in Dr Moran Shalev-Benami’s laboratory. Earlier, he collaborated with Nobel laureate Prof. Ada Yonath in the area of ribosome structural research. Upon returning to Kraków, he joined Dr hab. Sebastian Glatt’s team at the Małopolska Centre of Biotechnology.

Aside from receiving both JU Rector’s and Ministry of Education and Science’s scholarships (2016 and 2018, respectively), he has also been awarded with numerous national and international competitions. Additionally, he took part in the Top Minds programme co-organised jointly by the Polish-American Fulbright Commission and Top 500 Innovators.
