Fulbright internships for Jagiellonian University students

Fulbright internships for Jagiellonian University students

The Polish-American Fulbright Committee has announced the winners of this year's edition of the BioLAB programme. Fourteen students from the Jagiellonian University will get an year-long internship in one of four major research centres in Oklahoma, Chicago, Dallas and Charlottesville.

The BioLAB program is a one year internship for students of the biological, chemical and medical fields of study. During the internship students participate in current, important research projects, under the guidance of experienced researchers, at one of four selected American institutions: the University of Virginia, the University of Chicago, the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center and the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation.

Since its inception, more than 300 students have participated in the program. Approximately 20% of the graduates of this programme continued their studies at the PhD level in the US, and another 20% were accepted to the top universities and research institutions in Europe, including Oxford, Cambridge, Max Planck and ETH. Overall, 90% of the students have continued their careers at PhD level. The contributions of students who have participated in the program are documented by numerous papers, which they have co-authored, based on the research they conducted in the US.

For this year’s competition we received 110 applications. Recruitment consisted of two stages: formal and substantive evaluation of the electronic application form, and interviews with the selection committee. This year’s interviews were conducted in a hybrid format: in-person in Warsaw and Kraków and online via Zoom.

The following Jagiellonian University students were awarded in this year's competition:

  • Paulina Czarnota (Faculty of Physics, Astronomy and Applied Computer Science) and Hanna Kuźmińska (Faculty of Biochemistry, Biophysics and Biotechnology) - Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation,
  • Iga Piasecka, Krzysztof Pietrzak-Lichwa and Marek Sobczyk (Faculty of Biochemistry, Biophysics and Biotechnology) as well as Hlafira Polishchuk (Małopolska Centre of Biotechnology) - University of Chicago,
  • Karolina Filipowska (Faculty of Chemistry) and Anna Yakubovska (Faculty of Biochemistry, Biophysics and Biotechnology) - University of Texas, Southwestern Medical Center,
  • Anna Ferenc, Zuzanna Głowacka-Grzyb, Martyna Główczyk, Maciej Głuc, Zuzanna Juśkiewicz and Piotr Kraszewski (Faculty of Biochemistry, Biophysics and Biotechnology) - University of Virginia.
