A review paper devoted to the use of advance Raman spectroscopy and microscopy methods in adipose tissue studies has recently been published in the Progress in Lipid Research journal. The article has been authored by Dr Krzysztof Czamara, Zuzanna Majka, Ewa Stanek, Natalia Hachlica and Dr hab. Agnieszka Kaczor, Prof. UJ from the Chiroptical Spectroscopy Group of the JU Faculty of Chemistry.

The paper discusses the possible use of advance Raman spectroscopy and microscopy as analytical techniques in biomedical and clinical research into adipose tissue. The authors compared conventional analytical methods and modern techniques based on Raman spectroscopy used in identification and quantitative evaluation of adipose tissue. The article provides a critical and complex analysis of the usefulness of Raman methos in adipose issue research, especially concerning the perivascular adipose tissue. The authors intend to promote modern Raman methods as an interesting alternative to molecular biology methods in adipose tissue studies. 

The article, entitled Raman studies of the adipose tissue: Current state-of-art and future perspectives in diagnostics is available in open access on the sciencedirect.com website.

The members of Chiroptical Spectroscopy Group, led by Dr hab. Agnieszka Kaczor, Prof. UJ are using spectroscopy to answer problems from the interdisciplinary area between biosciences and chemistry. With the help of spectroscopy (chiroptical and beyond), microscopy and imaging they are studying biological samples in various environments, starting from model systems and analysis of basic phenomena, via investigation of simplified systems such as cell cultures, up to research on tissues obtained from cervical cancer patients.

The team’s current scientific interests oscillate around studying of chiral supramolecules, amplification and chirality transfer phenomenon, perivascular adipose tissue and its role in vascular pathologies as well as molecular pathogenesis of HPV and cervical cancer.
