On 24 October 2022, doctorate honoris causa of the Jagiellonian University was conferred upon Prof. Anders Bergenfelz, eminent expert in the field of endocrine surgery. The title was awarded for his lifetime achievements, and especially for his outstanding contribution to the development of modern endocrine surgery in Europe, Poland, and Kraków as well as long-time fruitful collaboration with the Jagiellonian University Medical College and other surgical centres in Poland.
The Jagiellonian University Senate decided to award Prof. Anders Bergenfelz with the honorary doctorate following the motion put forward by the Faculty of Medicine of the JU Medical College, supported by positive reviews accepted by the senates of the Medical University of Silesia in Katowice and the Medical University of Warsaw.
The decision to honour Prof. Bergenfelz was made in recognition of his outstanding achievements, and especially his role in the establishment of the database on surgically treated endocrine tumours and diseases – EUROCRINE, promotion and development of European specialisation in Endocrine surgery in collaboration with the European Union of Medical Specialists (UEMS), co-foundation of the European Union of Medical Specialists, his contribution to the development of endocrine surgery in Poland and Kraków, supporting the involvement of Polish surgeons in international research on the optimisation of the quality of surgical treatment of endocrine diseases, as well as promoting the Jagiellonian University in the world by making it the host of international medical congresses.
The title was awarded during a special session of the Jagiellonian University Senate in the historic Assembly Hall of JU Collegium Maius, chaired by the Jagiellonian University Vice-Rector for the Medical College Prof. Tomasz Grodzicki.
In the laudatory address, Prof. Marcin Barczyński from the JU Faculty of Medicine presented the life and work of Prof. Bergenfelz, discussing his research, educational and organisational achievements, with special focus on his 15-year-long cooperation with the Jagiellonian University, including joint efforts to create the EUROCRINE registry, his guest lectures at the JU Faculty of Medicine, enabling Kraków surgeons’ participation in foreign training courses, as well as collaboration within the framework of international surgical associations and organisations and joint organisation of congresses of experts in the field.
In his address to the JU academic community, Prof. Bergenfelz expressed his gratitude for the conferment of the title and satisfaction with his long-time collaboration with the Jagiellonian University Medical College in a number of areas and projects.
Professor Anders Bergenfelz was born in Halmstadt, Sweden in 1954. He graduated from the Faculty of Medicine at Lund University in 1981 and obtained the degree of a specialist surgeon in 1992. In 1994 he earned a post-doctoral degree, later becoming an associate professor (2008). Since 2011 he has been a full professor in the fields of Surgery and Medical Education. In the period 1999-2012 he was the head of the Clinic of Endocrine and Sarcoma Surgery at Lund University and in 2011-2017 – the Director of the ‘Practicum’ Clinical Skills Centre in Lund. He is a world recognised authority on endocrine surgery, who has authored 140 publications with impact factor (H-index: 36, citation index: 4658).
