Rector of the Jagiellonian University meets with the Ambassador of Ukraine

Rector of the Jagiellonian University meets with the Ambassador of Ukraine

Vasyl Zvarych, Ambassador of Ukraine to Poland, paid a visit to the Jagiellonian University in the company of Viacheslav Voinarovskyi, Consul General of Ukraine in Kraków, and Tamila Shutak, First Secretary of the Embassy. After meeting with JU Rector Prof. Jacek Popiel, the diplomat attended the presenation ceremony of the Man of the Year 2022 award, given jointly to the Ukrainian nation by the Federation of Regional Associations of Municipalities and Districts of the Republic of Poland.

Prof. Jacek Popiel stressed that the Jagiellonian University and the Consulate General of Ukraine in Kraków have developed a very close relationship. He also emphasised that the academic community of the Kraków university stands united with the Ukrainian nation. Lastly, he stated that the oldest Polish university will continue to support Ukrainian efforts for as long as it is necessary, as its soldiers fight for values that are fundamental for Europe and the entire democratic world.

Viacheslav Voinarovskyi said that the Jagiellonian University academic community has shown great kindness and generosity towards Ukraine in the face of Russian aggression, sending multiple relief supplies transports, providing psychological help for refugees, and accommodating those in need of shelter in student dormitories. He expressed his gratitude to Prof. Popiel for his personal engagement in helping Ukraine by advocating for the Ukrainian cause during meetings and assemblies of various national organisations and associations.

The Ambassador of Ukraine to Poland thanked the Jagiellonian University for helping his country, in particular for taking care of Ukrainian students. He expressed his firm belief that Ukraine will fight until victory – not just for Ukraine, but for the entire free world.

Next, Vasyl Zvarych proceeded to the Collegium Novum Assambly Hall, where the President of the Federation of Regional Associations of Municipalities and Districts of the Republic of Poland Kazimierz Barczyk presented him with the Man of the Year 2022 award, given jointly to the people of Ukraine ‘as a sign of the greatest respect for the heroic attitude of the Ukrainian nation in the face of the barbaric Russian invasion as well as gratitude for the unwavering fight for the freedom and independence of Ukraine, safety of Europe and the defence of democratic principles of the Western civilisation in response to the Russian aggression, the largest military conflict in Europe since the Second World War’.

Receiving the award, the Ambassador thanked the attendees on behalf of Ukraine and its people. He added that every Ukrainian citizen is fighting in the war: as a soldier, diplomat, scientist or artist, and they all have their own frontlines. He also expressed his admiration for Poles: ‘This is the behaviour of real friends, who have experienced such barbarity first-hand and who want peace for the next generations. We live in a historic moment and we cannot let it go to waste. We need to be united to win together. We need to fight for our common values even for the price of our own lives’, said Vasyl Zvarych.
