JU researcher to investigate how crops accumulate heavy metals

JU researcher to investigate how crops accumulate heavy metals

The National Agency for Academic Exchange (NAWA) has announced the results of the call for joint projects to be carried out by Polish and Slovakian researchers. Among them is Dr Hab. Aneta Słomka, Prof. UJ from the JU Faculty of Biology, who will collaborate with her colleagues from the Slovak University of Agriculture in Nitra on a project entitled ‘Risks of toxic heavy metals to selected crop plants classified as superfood of the 21st century’.

The main aim of the project is to collaborate on research involving the potential accumulation of heavy metals in selected crops as well as analysis of reactions and conditional changes induced by heavy metals, with particular emphasis on those affecting human nutrition.

Safety assessment is an important factor when it comes to introducing new products to the market. Seeing as there are a variety of harmful soil pollutants, including heavy metals, that factor becomes a serious issue, since there are currently no uniformly accepted testing procedures.

The Polish-Slovak NAWA programme aims to support researcher mobility within the framework of joint research projects carried out by applicants from Poland and Slovakia. The funding is provided solely for expenses related to mobility, while the rest of the money will be covered, among others, by the JU Faculty of Biology’s won funding schemes.
